In many parts of Africa, including South Africa, traditional banking infrastructure is often inaccessible or insufficient to meet the needs of the population. With a significant portion of the population unbanked or underbanked, there is a growing demand for alternative financial services that can provide access to secure, convenient, and affordable financial transactions. Mobile wallets, also known as mobile money, offer a digital solution via cellphones that can address these challenges.

Key research takeaways.

South Africans are increasingly going cashless through the use of digital wallet platforms. These platforms are on the rise and the appetite for them is high. Cash is still very popular but has more cons to using it than pros, cards are also not accessible to everyone.  The solution will need to be quick, as quick as any e-wallet or similar currently in the market.

Business Wallet

Many people have a side hustle and have other ways of making cash other than their 9 to 5 day job.

The Business Wallet allows users to keep a separate wallet from their personal wallet with the ability to be payed directly into the Business Wallet.  They are also able to transfer money and make payments.

To promote the Business Wallet we display a “call to action” screen during sign-up, on login as well through strategic placement within the MoMo app.

PayShap

MoMo had the opportunity to implement new cash-in facilities using PayShap integration points. Disruptive changes have occurred in payments technology stemming from the launch of PayShap. Staying at the forefront of technology will provide MoMo SA a competitive edge.

Introducing an additional cash-in channel for MoMo customers will also expand the MoMo footprint, increase customer cash-in activities and increase convenience for MoMo customers.

Going forward
Going forward,  MoMo needs to be updated continuously according to a well planned and thought out  roadmap. The UI is outdated and needs to be updated.To ensure the product grows, continuous improvements need to be implemented and it will be key to stay up to date with technical and new advancements in the space of mobile wallets and money.
